Those who are wanting something else to sink their teeth into besides Anthem can rejoice: Bungie has broken the silence on the upcoming Destiny 2 Season of the Drifter. According to a video put together by the company, players can look forward to any confusion around Gambit mode, end-game progression, and “Joker’s Wild” being cleared up.
There’s been a bit of a lull in notable updates to Destiny 2’s quests since The Black Armory and Volundr Forge’s rollout in late 2018 as part of the Annual Pass and the Season of the Forge. Players have been anticipating the arrival of the next content cycle, which Bungie has previously been referring to as “Joker’s Wild”. However, it’s now clear from the video that Joker’s Wild has been a bit of a misnomer. There is, in fact, no codename for the DLC content that’s going to be added in Season of the Drifter.
That bit of news is just the icing on the Drifter-sized cake that Bungie is teasing players with this latest bit of anticipated footage on Youtube. It looks like the fast and furious Gambit mode is having its stakes raised yet again, with the introduction of an upgraded experience in Gambit Prime and changes being made to the classes available to players. On top of that, there’s the introduction of The Reckoning - a PvE experience brought to you straight from the ship of the Drifter himself. The high-octane action shown off in Bungie’s video looks squarely focused on a Firefight-type mode with time-sensitive objectives where players will be able to earn high-level gear to use in Gambit Prime.
The video also briefly touches on some cool equipment that you can acquire for Gambit mode and the introduction of bounties that will make sure players meet the item level requirements to jump right into the thick of the action with the expansion within a few hours of cracking into it. This should helpfully preempt any previously onerous gear prerequisites that the community complained about with The Black Armory when it was released.
It’s worth noting that Bungie’s 180-degree turn on naming the DLC could potentially be for a few reasons. It seems unlikely that the studio will leave the DLC unnamed altogether. Are they changing directions because of potential content alterations that would make “Joker’s Wild” a less than stellar choice? On one hand, it could be that the name itself was a misnomer or a potential spoiler for important plot points. On the other, Bungie might be scrambling to rehaul some content in the wake of its split from Activision, so leaving the name as a work-in-progress might be indicative that there are still loose ends to tie up.
Bungie has certainly given players a lot to look forward to in the Season of the Drifter, and it looks like there’s now a renewed focus on ensuring that the latest content can be accessed by the community. From new exotic weapons, new lore related to the Nine, and souped-up class changes that look to make Gambit a more distinct experience, there’s likely to be something for everyone when Destiny 2 pops back up on everyone’s radar.
