For a while it seemed that fans of Bungie’s Destiny weren’t going to get the sequel they were hoping for. Then, among leaks and rumours, the release date for the science fiction sequel was released prior to a cinematic trailer teasing a zanier and more comedic game than the first. Exactly one week later, Bungie has finally unveiled Destiny 2, with a brand new trailer, plot details, and some exciting developments for PC fans. Check out the trailer below:
The official reveal trailer “Rally the Troops” expands on the tongue-in-cheek tone of the previous cinematic, offering a glimpse of the Destiny 2’s character-driven story. Bungie and Activision Publishing have also announced that the first hands-on gameplay reveal livestream will be broadcast globally on May 18. Bungie CEO added that a beta for Destiny 2 is slated to land in the summer.
Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg talked about some of the developments that have been made between the acclaimed Destiny and Destiny 2, including the exciting reveal that the sequel will be available to PC gamers:
“Destiny was the biggest launch of a new console video game franchise ever. Along with our incredibly talented partners at Bungie, we are focusing on making Destiny 2 even better, with state of the art first person action, an awesome new story, great characters, and thoughtful innovations that make the game more accessible to all different kinds of players. We’re also bringing Destiny 2 to the PC platform for the first time. Destiny 2 will make an already great game franchise better than ever.”
In Destiny 2, players create a Guardian to act as one of humanity’s designated protectors. The last safe city on Earth has fallen to a powerful new army known as the Red Legion led by the ruthless Ghaul, and it is the duty of the Guardians to stand together and fight against this threat in order to reclaim their home. Bungie and Activision promise a fresh story filled with new destinations and an expansive amount of activities to undertake. They’re promising something for almost every type of gamer in Destiny 2, making the game more inclusive with room for solo, co-op, and competitive play in a vast evolving universe.
Before it was even officially announced, Destiny 2 was considered one of the most anticipated video games of 2017, with millions of players across the world still playing the original almost three years after its release despite lukewarm responses to the game’s post-release content. It maintains a cult following, as well as the record for biggest new franchise launch of all time.
Destiny 2 Pricing and Bundles
Destiny 2 is currently Rating Pending (RP) by the ESRB and will be available at a suggested retail price of $59.99. The product line-up will also feature the Destiny 2 - Game + Expansion Pass Bundle at $89.99 SRP, the Destiny 2 - Digital Deluxe Edition featuring premium digital contentat $99.99 SRP, the Limited Edition at $99.99 SRP, and the Collector’s Edition, featuring a fully-wearable Destiny 2 - Frontier Bag, Expansion Pass, premium digital content and a Cabal-themed Collector’s Box for $249.99 SRP.

It seems as though Destiny 2 is looking to make a fresh start, even if that means abandoning characters, planets and activities from the first game. Last year Kotaku reported on the development of Destiny 2, claiming that “all signs point to the developers starting from scratch,” a bold move considering that Destiny sold over $500 million at launch and went on to win the BAFTA Award for Best Game of 2014.
