Bungie accidentally insinuated a release date for Destiny 3 in its surprise announcement of 2020 plans for Destiny 2. Players have been wondering when Destiny 3 would release for quite some time. While Bungie has not provided a solid answer, the developer gives away some pretty solid clues in the Destiny 2 2020 rundown.

The blog post details many changes coming to Destiny 2, including a major update to legendary items. Legendaries will be capped at a set power level. As Guardians gain the ability to reach power levels above that number, the items will then become obsolete for raids, Trials of Osiris, and any other activity that considers power level, but they will still be usable for the Crucible and other activities. Raiders and other more hardcore players, on the other hand, will need to draw their arsenal from the new pool that will be introduced. The post goes on to cover more things upon which Bungie will focus with Destiny 2, including a dedication to deliver an “evolving world” - something it acknowledges it has been failing at. Faction Rallies will not be returning and bright engrams will no longer be sold for real money.

Bungie has many plans for 2020, but Destiny 3 is apparently not one of them according to the blog entry. This means that the release date for Destiny 3 will not happen anytime in the coming year. In fact, the post references time “beyond” 2020. This could be an indicator that Destiny 3 won’t happen in 2021 either - though Destiny 3 development is already underway according to a source well-known for their reliability in Destiny leaks.

If the information is true, Destiny 3 will bring a lot of interesting things to the table. The game is rumored to be more hardcore and RPG-based than Destiny 2, where Guardians can use Darkness and compete for territory in open-world PVE areas. The game is rumored to not be suited to the casual player either, as the source says players who hop on for a few hours a week will ultimately abandon the game. All of this is very exciting for players, as Guardians have been solely bound to the Light since the first installment of the game.

Though an exact Destiny 3 release date is not known, players now have a good idea what to expect from their remaining time with Destiny 2. If the rumors about the next installment in the series are true, Destiny 3 will certainly be worth what players now know will be quite a long wait. Fortunately, Bungie is giving them plenty of things to do until then.

Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PlayStation 4.
