An extended TV spot for Detective Pikachu debuts online. The Pokémon film is generating a lot of positive buzz, and is projected to open higher than Aquaman at the box office.

Detective Pikachu is based on the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name. Unlike the main games, Detective Pikachu was not about catching wild Pokémon, or becoming the best trainer in the region. Instead, it was a story-driven title with a focus on solving mysteries. At first, it seemed like an odd choice for a movie adaption. But, with the first Detective Pikachu trailer, and later the second, fans and the general audience alike are anticipating it as one of the big hits of 2019.

The new TV spot comes from Ryan Reynolds’ (voice of Detective Pikachu) own Twitter. It offers a surprising amount of new footage, some of it extended from scenes we’ve seen in previous Detective Pikachu trailers. It also gives viewers a quality look at some of the many Pokémon that will be appearing in the film.

Whereas the previous trailers gave the movie a cheerful tone more or less, the new spot is the most somber in atmosphere. This tells viewers that the film will have notable emotional scenes. The relationship between Pikachu and Tim Goodman takes a center focus in the spot. Aside from that, viewers are treated to a look at Braviary, the rainbow-tailed bird from Pokémon Black and White. Psyduck is given substantial screen time here, and Jigglypuff is actually seen briefly singing. All of this is perfectly synced with Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” song.

Wherever you look, you can find almost nothing but positive buzz for Detective Pikachu. It’s easy to see why: There’s a certain level of quality that is erupting from marketing that just hasn’t been seen in a lot of video game movie adaptations. Warcraft’s marketing arguably gave off a generic vibe. Rampage looked fun, but not as well made cinema. The most highly rated video game movie might be 2018’s Tomb Raider, which offered a pretty decent adaption of the rebooted game. Even so, critical reception of Tomb Raider was just that - decent, nothing great. Detective Pikachu might be able to finally break the video game movie curse.

With many people still playing Pokémon GO, Pokémon Sword and Shield releasing later this year on Nintendo Switch, and even a Japanese CGI movie remake of the first Pokémon movie, Detective Pikachu is releasing at just the right time to capitalize on Pokémon’s immense brand.
