Back in March Disney announced that it wasn’t planning any future updates to its Disney Infinity 3.0 game for Apple TV, much to the dismay of users who shelled out cash for the game or the $100 “starter pack” sold by Apple. Now, Disney has announced in a post on its blog that it is officially discontinuing production of Disney Infinity across all platforms.

Disney revealed the decision to shareholders during its earnings call earlier today, explaining that the shutdown would cost the company $147 million. In the blog post, Disney executive John Blackburn explained that Disney Infinity was created to “bring the best of Disney storytelling to life,” but ultimately the difficult decision to shutter the business had to made.

As for the future, there are still two more Disney Infinity releases scheduled: three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month and a Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

Disney Infinity 3.0 was released for Apple TV shortly after the fourth-gen model launched last year. To entice hardcore Disney fanatics to play, Apple and Disney also partnered on a  $100 Disney Infinity 3.0 bundle. Oddly enough, Apple is still selling the bundle on its website even though the game itself will receive no future updates. The bundle includes a controller and a Disney Infinity figurine stand.

Ultimately it’s disappointing to see an Apple TV bite the dust so soon after launch, but it’s somewhat reassuring that Disney is shuttering its entire Infinity lineup, not just the Apple TV game like it was originally thought.
