Disney CEO Bob Iger jokes Tom Holland owes him a drink for helping save Spider-Man in the MCU. Last summer, the film industry was rocked by the news Disney and Sony could not reach a new deal to keep Holland’s version of Peter Parker in the MCU. It seemed like the studios were going to go their separate ways, but they later reconvened and agreed to stay in business together. Spider-Man is remaining in the MCU, with Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 set for release in 2021 and the character slated to appear in another MCU installment (most likely an Avengers movie or some sort of team-up film).
Fans rejoiced when Disney and Sony decided to keep a good thing going, and they have none other than Holland to thank. The actor personally helped the studios reach a new deal, and was actually drunk during a phone call with Iger that played a key role in keeping Spider-Man in the MCU. Now, Iger has his sights set on sharing a cold one with Holland to celebrate the work he did to save Spider-Man.
On Twitter, Iger shared photos from the Onward premiere of himself with Chris Pratt and Holland. The two MCU stars headline the latest Pixar offering, voicing two elf brothers. In his post, Iger said Holland owes him a “pint.” Check out his tweet in the space below:
When Disney and Sony reached their new deal, word was Marvel was going to look for a way to write Spider-Man out of the MCU before the agreement expired. However, more recently, Sony Chairman Tim Rothman said he hopes the studios’ partnership continues for many years to come. That means the studios might be negotiating again in the near future, ironing out terms that benefit all parties. As it stands right now, the Disney/Sony deal is a win-win for both companies. The former (who owns the Spider-Man licensing rights) gets to keep Spider-Man in the MCU and organically continue the character’s story from previous installments (namely, Far From Home’s cliffhanger ending). In the meantime, Sony keeps a majority of the Spider-Man box office profits and is now gradually implementing spinoffs like Morbius into the MCU. There are several reasons why Disney and Sony would want to keep extending their arrangement, and hopefully they do just that.
In all likelihood, Holland will owe a different Disney CEO a beer if and when the Disney/Sony deal is renegotiated. Iger has said he plans to retire in December 2021, so unless the next Disney/Sony talks take place in the immediate future, it’ll fall on Iger’s successor to keep Spider-Man in the MCU. Ideally, whoever that person is understands how beneficial this unprecedented arrangement is for everyone involved and there are no more hiccups along the way.
