Disney+ could greatly benefit from the addition of a playlist option, which would significantly enhance customer’s viewing experience. Disney’s streaming service just launched last month, and is already making changes based on user feedback; for example, due to a great deal of complaints, Disney+ finally added a much-needed “Continue Watching” option at the end of November. Could a playlist option be next?

Disney first entered the streaming wars with Disney+, a brand-new streaming platform that supports a huge library of shows and movies from its own in-house properties, Lucasfilm, Pixar, Marvel Studios, and 20th Century Fox. Subscribers have access to a wide range of content that includes Saturday morning cartoons from the 1990s like X-Men: The Animated Series, Golden-age Hollywood films such as Miracle on 34th Street, and Disney animated classics like 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Even recent blockbuster hits like Avengers: Endgame are included in its lineup.

Disney+ has a watchlist feature, which allows subscribers to includes movies and shows that they want to watch later; however, it doesn’t have a feature that picks out certain episodes of TV shows, nor does it have the ability to set up a combination of videos to play in succession automatically. As a discussion on Reddit demonstrates, there is a segment of users who want this level of customization in their Disney+ viewing experience. A playlist could let users create a customized list of episodes, not only so that users could mix in different shows or skip particular episodes, but also because this could fix the problem with some shows on Disney+ being listed out of order. Furthermore, these playlists could potentially be shared with other Disney+ users, encouraging users to engage in the platform in social manner.

Disney+ is already doing exceptionally well, considering that it managed to exceed 15 million subscribers in just five days. However, it isn’t the threat to Netflix that everyone expected. Despite the popularity of The Mandalorian, and all the other Marvel and Stars Wars shows that are on the way to Disney+ in the next two years, Disney+ is still lacking in content. Having a unique feature like a playlist option could set it even further apart from its competition.
