Based on what’s been revealed so far, Marvel’s Disney+ shows are much more comic book-accurate when it comes to costumes than the MCU movies. Many of the central characters featured in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Hawkeye are dressed in costumes that honor the comics.

With Disney+, Marvel Studios has found a new avenue to branch out and expand the MCU, simultaneously establishing new characters with Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel, and building on existing MCU heroes (and villains) in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision, and Hawkeye. The interconnectedness between the movies and the Disney+ shows is made clear by the confirmation that some of Disney+’s characters, such as Ms. Marvel, will be moved over to the movies, and the comment from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige that the Disney+ shows have to be watched for future Marvel movies to make sense.

So far, reaction to what’s been seen from the Disney+ Super Bowl TV spot and concept art has been mostly positive, and a lot of that could stem from the new costumes given to the characters. Many of them look more like their comic book counterparts than ever. Here are all the new costumes sported by the heroes and villains of Marvel’s Disney+ shows.

Scarlet Witch

As Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) wasn’t a fully-fledged superhero in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it made sense for her not to wear a costume in the movie, but later appearances did attempt to make her look at least a bit more like the comic book character. WandaVision is going even further by giving her the classic red headdress and her original costume from the 1960s. How much it’ll actually be used though, remains to be seen. It could be that it won’t be used in a serious manner and won’t have a big presence in the show, similar to how Cap’s original suit was used in Captain America: The First Avenger.

U.S. Agent

In Marvel Comics, U.S. Agent aka John Walker was a temporary successor to Captain America in the 1980s, whose overly aggressive approach to crime-fighting clashed with Captain America’s ideals. After Steve Rogers went back to being Captain America, Walker took up a black costume - which also belonged to Steve - and adopted the “U.S. Agent” moniker. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is apparently adapting some version of Walker’s Captain America arc from the comics, but is replacing Steve with Falcon (Anthony Mackie).

As a government-appointed Captain America, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s John Walker (Wyatt Russell) will don a suit that combines elements of Captain America’s costume and his classic U.S. Agent outfit. He’ll have Cap’s blue suit and U.S. Agent’s chest stripes and star. This could be a strategic decision on Marvel’s part, since not making it a perfect adaptation of U.S. Agent’s comic book look leaves room for him to wear his classic black suit at a later point, once he officially abandons the “Captain America” mantle.

Hawkeye (Kate Bishop)

Months ago, concept art was released for Hawkeye, allowing for a look at the two titular heroes. The young female Hawkeye that Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) will take under his wing hasn’t been cast, but the artwork gives a good idea of what to expect from her costume. Her purple costume, glasses, and hair make her look startlingly similar to the comic book heroine’s current design, as opposed to her Young Avengers look. Apparently, Kate Bishop is one hero that fans won’t have to wait years after their MCU debut to get a proper comic-inspired outfit.

Falcon

Sam Wilson was handed Captain America’s shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be suiting up as the new Sentinel of Liberty right away - but he will be sporting a new Falcon costume. At least until he can take the Captain America mantle away from U.S. Agent, he’ll be sporting a red, white, and gray costume. Traditionally speaking, red and white are the comic book Falcon’s main color scheme.

Based on the colors and the patterns on the suit, it would seem that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is drawing inspiration from multiple costumes, but has borrowed a great deal from Falcon’s early to mid-2000s design. But regardless of the particular suit that inspired it, it’s without a doubt Falcon’s first-ever comic book accurate costume. Sam Wilson has gone into action as “Falcon” in five MCU movies at this point, and not once has he looked like the character from the comics. So far, the MCU has stuck fast to Falcon’s military-designed, weaponized wingsuit. It took Falcon getting a TV show for him to finally have his iconic costume.

Hawkeye

Of the six members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in 2012’s The Avengers, the only character whose costume deviated greatly from the source material was the one worn by Hawkeye, who actually looked more like Ultimate Hawkeye than the classic hero. The movie barely paid tribute to his purple color scheme, and though Marvel has since allowed a bit more purple in Hawkeye’s design, they’ve been quite careful with it, thus preventing him from ever truly resembling Earth’s Mightiest Marskman. Based on the concept art for Disney+’s Hawkeye, the new series isn’t afraid to embrace Hawkeye’s comic book design by moving slightly away from the black and embracing the purple.

Baron Zemo

One of the biggest complaints about Captain America: Civil War was its depiction of its villain, Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl), who didn’t fight Captain America or share anything in common with his comic book namesake. While it may be fair to say that Civil War’s Zemo was a disappointment, Marvel is looking to redeem him in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier by making him “Baron Zemo” and giving him his iconic purple mask, which in the comics was literally glued to his face. The mask is such an important aspect of the comic book villain, and is as recognizable to Zemo as Mjolnir is to Thor, so in a way, the character was incomplete without it. So just as it is with Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon, it’s all thanks to Marvel’s Disney+ shows that fans will finally see Baron Zemo as the villain he always should have been.
