Any Pixar film is a big cinematic event and this year sees the release of an original feature from the famous animation studio, Coco. The Day of the Dead festival-themed movie promises to tell the story of a young boy named Miguel who sets off on an extraordinary adventure to unravel an ancient mystery and the cast includes the likes of Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt.
Disney’s Academy Award success continued this past weekend and a large part of that can be attributed to the efforts of Pixar, the geniuses behind franchises such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo. However most of the company’s recent triumphs have been sequels to already beloved movies and their last original release - The Good Dinosaur - was arguably the studio’s first proper commercial flop. As a result, expectations surrounding Coco are more cautious than usual.
It now appears as if fans won’t have to wait much longer before getting their first glimpse of Coco, however, as the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) have released their rating for the movie’s first trailer. Clocking in at just under a minute and a half, the clip has passed uncut with a U certificate; meaning those expecting visceral fight scenes and Tartantino-esque dialogue should prepare for disappointment.
The timing of the certification means that Coco’s trailer will likely coincide with the release of Beauty and the Beast in March, meaning Disney fans will be among the first to get a glimpse at one of Pixar’s newest projects. Unfortunately, the movie has already been met with criticism from the Mexican-American community due to an attempt to trademark the project’s original title: ‘Día de los Muertos’.
Given the failure of The Good Dinosaur compared to their past output, Pixar will be looking to Coco to succeed critically and commercially and it’s certainly a welcome move to continue on with original movies in spite of that setback. With Cars 3 and Toy Story 4 in the works, Pixar have two future guaranteed hits on their hands and could easily pump out sequel after sequel, laughing all the way to the bank.
The company has, however, stated previously that they would prefer to focus on original content as opposed to sequels - and in a world filled with remakes and bloated franchises, this level of creative integrity must be commended. Whilst things may not have worked out on The Good Dinosaur, every billion dollar franchise starts with a single movie and without taking risks on new ideas, the next Toy Story will never be uncovered. It’s also worth remembering that the company’s other recent original movie, Inside Out, was a huge success.
