In the latest entry of our ongoing series, Ryan George reveals what (probably) happened in the pitch meeting for new streaming service Disney+. Having recently absorbed 20th Century Fox into its massive collection of entertainment properties, Disney joined the increasingly fierce race for streaming dominance. Former collaborator Netflix is now the enemy, with Marvel’s poor Defenders proving to be the first casualty of war.
There are a few originals already on Disney+, including High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (yes, that’s the real title), a live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp, and a show with Jeff Goldblum, but the biggest attraction so far has been The Mandalorian. More specifically, the Mandalorian’s adorable sidekick/adopted child, Baby Yoda. With the power to levitate rhinos and melt hearts, Baby Yoda could well prove to be Disney+’s greatest mascot. Let’s hope Mickey Mouse doesn’t get jealous.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is still in the process of migrating over to Disney+, with recent releases like Ant-Man & the Wasp and Captain Marvel still tied up in the previous Netflix deal. It will also be a while before shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki make their way to Disney+. In the meantime, though, you can enjoy classics like Mr. Boogedy, The Shaggy D.A., and Gus - a movie about a mule who plays football.
As the debate over whether or not Marvel movies are true cinema drags on, there’s one thing that can’t be denied: Disney is very good at making money. Between the MCU, Star Wars movies, and the ongoing parade of live-action remakes of animated classics, the studio has been dominating the box office over the past decade. With all of these movies now destined to eventually join the Disney+ library, streaming and VOD could prove to be the latest corner of entertainment to fall to the Mouse House’s domination of Hollywood.
