The new Disney+ streaming service is now thought to have exceeded 15 million subscribers in the first five days alone. Disney launched its new video streaming program in a select number of countries in early November, but even before the launch it was clear the service was likely to be popular due to the almost two million people who pre-ordered a Disney+ subscription.
The extent of Disney+’s popularity became abundantly clear in the hours following its launch. Being a service that’s packed with content from the Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar franchises, Disney+ was confirmed to have amassed around 10 million subscribers in its first day, a number which surpassed even the most generous pre-launch predictions.
The latest 15 million figure comes from research by InMyArea and is extrapolated from survey data collected in the days following the launch of Disney’s streaming service. Other findings from the survey included how almost twice as many respondents were aware of Disney+ compared to how many knew of Apple TV+. This is in addition to more than half of those surveyed believing the price of Disney+ to be “fair” considering what’s on offer. In contrast, only a quarter of people thought the streaming service was “too expensive.” Disney+ costs $6.99 per month, and while that’s higher than what Apple TV+ currently charges it comes with significantly more content.
Irrespective of exactly how many subscribers Disney+ picked up in its opening days, it is clear millions have already subscribed to the service in order to binge watch all of their Disney favorites in an ad-free environment. What is less clear is how many will remain subscribers over a longer period of time. Disney+ only offers a seven-day free trial, and so those millions of early subscribers have either now become paid customers or canceled their subscription. A clearer picture of where Disney ranks in the streaming wars will become available once more recent figures come through.
In the meantime, it seems likely Disney+ will continue to do well and continue to collect even more new subscribers as it becomes available in more regions. In addition, it is likely the release of more Disney original shows will motivate existing subscribers to remain subscribed while also helping to bring in new users, especially if those new exclusive movies and shows prove to be as popular as The Mandalorian (and Baby Yoda). Although, with 46% of those surveyed stating the most appealing Disney+ feature was access to the Disney and Pixar catalogs, Disney may not even need to rely so much on new content to keep subscribers happy.
