Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is reportedly casting a Hispanic female teenager as a supporting lead, who could be America Chavez aka Miss America. When Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige announced the initial projects on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 slate, it was confirmed a Doctor Strange sequel would release in May 2021. The title was unveiled as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with Benedict Cumberbatch to return as Stephen Strange. Feige also revealed MCU actress Elizabeth Olsen would reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, where these announcements were made, Feige brought out Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson and confirmed he’d return for the sequel. However, Derrickson has since departed the Doctor Strange sequel, and Multiverse of Madness is currently without a director. With a May 2021 release date already slated and production expected to start sometime this year, Marvel Studios is searching for Derrickson’s replacement. In the meantime, casting continues on the movie and a new casting call indicates a Young Avenger is joining the MCU.
As reported by The Illuminerdi, Marvel is casting a “teenage Hispanic female” for a supporting lead role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While there may be other Marvel Comics characters who fit that description, America Chavez is the most well known. It’s also possible the character is an original one for the Doctor Strange sequel, but the status as a supporting lead suggests she’ll be a major part of the film and even Marvel’s supporting characters tend to be pulled from the comics. It was also previously reported that Miss America would join the MCU soon.
If it does turn out that America Chavez makes her MCU debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, that would fall in line with some other Marvel characters being introduced in Phase 4. A number of Young Avengers heroes are either confirmed or rumored to be joining the MCU in the coming years. Kate Bishop will co-star in the Hawkeye Disney+ series, plus it’s been reported WandaVision is casting Hulkling and there are rumors of Kid Loki appearing in the Loki show. Should all these characters actually appear in Phase 4, Marvel could unite them for a Young Avengers movie or TV show down the line.
Still, it remains to be seen whether Doctor Strange 2 does cast America Chavez and who eventually lands the role. Since the character is described as a teenager it seems unlikely any of actresses who’ve said they’d be up for the role - like Gina Rodriguez and Stephanie Beatriz - will be cast. Given Marvel’s track record of casting the exact right actors in their MCU roles, though, fans shouldn’t be too worried. Whenever America Chavez/Miss America joins the MCU, whether in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or later on, Marvel fans can expect her to be played by an excellent actress and, hopefully, have a key role in the future of the superhero franchise.
