Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness provides a perfect opportunity for Marvel Studios to bring back Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver. Unlike nearly every other hero in the MCU, Pietro Maximoff only appeared in one movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron. Not long after joining forces with the Avengers, Quicksilver was killed trying to save Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Only one of the Maximoff Twins, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), survived to become a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following a starring role in the Disney+ series, WandaVision, Scarlet Witch is set to make her fifth appearance in the MCU with 2021’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange is rumored to pit the Sorcerer Supreme against a classic member from Doctor Strange’s rogues’ gallery, Nightmare. Not much else is known about what Doctor Strange 2 will entail, or what other notable characters from the MCU could make an appearance.

One character fans are hoping to see is Scarlet Witch’s brother, Quicksilver. In the comic books, Quicksilver is one of Marvel’s fastest heroes. Having joined the Avengers all the way back in Avengers #16 in 1965, Quicksilver is one of the oldest members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and a character who played a supporting role in some of Marvel’s biggest stories, such as “The Kree-Skrull War”, “House of M”, “Heroes Reborn”, “Infinity Crusade”, and “Avengers vs. X-Men.” As an important hero from the comics, it would make sense if Marvel wanted to find another way to use Quicksilver again.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Says He’s Not Returning

In an interview with Screen Rant, Aaron Taylor-Johnson talked about the possibility of returning to the MCU as Quicksilver. Though the actor appeared open to coming back, he also said that he won’t be playing Quicksilver anytime soon. Though this is far from encouraging news for Quicksilver fans, it doesn’t rule out a return for Pietro Maximoff. While it may shoot down any possibility of him appearing in WandaVision, Quicksilver could still show up in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

After all, the movie is still over two years away, so it may be a while before the movie gets off the ground. Also, since Quicksilver is currently dead in the MCU, his inclusion in Doctor Strange 2 certainly sounds like something that Marvel may want to save as a surprise reveal. Either way, the actor’s comments don’t mean that Quicksilver is finished in the MCU.

Quicksilver Was Killed Off Way Too Soon In Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron’s Quicksilver is best remembered for his line, “Bet you didn’t see that coming,” but aside from that, Quicksilver isn’t really given his moment of glory, and a lot of that stems from the fact that Quicksilver was criminally underused in Age of Ultron. He had few lines, and the movie didn’t bother to really develop his relationships with any of the characters other than his sister. One saving grace for the character is that in terms of his personality, Age of Ultron is at least able to present a more comic book accurate version of Quicksilver than the one that’s introduced in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Age of Ultron treats audiences to the over-protective, arrogant, and somewhat grumpy speedster that comic book readers will recognize, but even so, only traces of these aspects of his character are found in the film. Age of Ultron clearly doesn’t make an effort to build Quicksilver into a fan-favorite MCU hero. To make matters worse, Quicksilver is killed off, and his death is used to motivate the other heroes (particularly Scarlet Witch).

After Age of Ultron, the MCU leaves Quicksilver behind, but isn’t so quick to forget about Scarlet Witch, who factors heavily into what triggers the conflict between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) in Captain America: Civil War. Later, Scarlet Witch forms a romantic relationship with Vision (Paul Bettany), which becomes integral to the story in Avengers: Infinity War. Quicksilver’s Age of Ultron ending robs fans of their chance to see how the speedster would have fit into these stories. Like Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver could have evolved into a full-fledged superhero, complete with a costume.

The X-Men Movies Proved How Great Quicksilver Can Be

Another issue with Age of Ultron is its depiction of Quicksilver’s powers. As a speedster, Quicksilver has an ability that shows like Smallville and The Flash, and movies like Justice League have been known to have plenty of fun with in the past. Perhaps the movies that make the best use of super speed are X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix with their take on Quicksilver. In using slow-motion scenes that show audiences how things move from Quicksilver’s perspective, the X-Men movies are able to create some great, light-hearted moments. In fact, some feel that Quicksilver’s speed has delivered some of the best scenes in the X-Men movies, which is unfortunately not an argument that can be made for Avengers: Age of Ultron’s Quicksilver. As the X-Men movies have proven, Quicksilver’s powers have a ton of potential, and a Marvel movie could make excellent use of them, if they’re handled correctly.

How Doctor Strange 2 Can Bring Back Quicksilver

Bringing back a dead character can be problematic, and one issue with it is the idea that it takes away from the emotional impact of the death, but in this case, that may not be a concern. Quicksilver’s death was six years ago, and it’ll be eight years by the time Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness releases. So many other, much more significant deaths have occurred since then, so resurrecting Quicksilver won’t spark much controversy.

If Marvel has any intention of ever reviving Quicksilver, there may never be a better time to do it than Doctor Strange 2. First of all, it includes Scarlet Witch, a character with a strong emotional connection to Quicksilver. Furthermore, the subject materials offers two completely different ways for Quicksilver to appear. One way is that Scarlet Witch, who may use her reality-warping magic in the film, could use this power to restore Quicksilver to life, which is certainly a feat that her comic book counterpart has pulled off in the past. Some sort of trauma may motivate Scarlet Witch to bring back the people she’s lost. That may or may not be how Vision is brought back into the picture in WandaVision. Alternatively, the Quicksilver we know may instead remain dead, and another version of Quicksilver could be encountered in an alternate reality, especially since the movie’s title suggests that multiple parallel timelines will be incorporated into the plot.
