Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that a character that Marvel has always wanted to utilize will be in Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness. The highly anticipated sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange won’t premiere until 2021, but details about the film keep steadily being released.

Stephen Strange (portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch) began his story as an arrogant, albeit brilliant, neurosurgeon who loses his most prized possession - the use of his hands - in a car crash. Eager to heal himself so he could return to his career, Strange’s journey led him to the Ancient One who saw his potential and trained him in the mystic arts. Stephen Strange quickly learned to harness the power of the Eye of Agamotto, which turns out to hold one of the Infinity Stones that he would later give to Thanos in exchange for Tony Stark’s life in Avengers: Infinity War. Doctor Strange foresaw that the only way to defeat Thanos was for Stark to sacrifice himself in Avengers: Endgame. His ability to create portals led to one of the most epic scenes from Avengers: Endgame, where all of the snapped Avengers returned to assemble via Strange’s portals. Strange was last seen attending Tony’s funeral.

Feige confirmed in a Q&A with New York Film Academy that a new character will be revealed in Doctor Strange 2 that Marvel Studios has always wanted to use. While Feige was quite obscure in his choice of words regarding who or what the mystery character could be, his excitement over his or her inclusion was evident.

While concrete details about the upcoming sequel remain somewhat vague, it has been officially confirmed that the Disney+ series Loki will tie into Doctor Strange 2. Another known fact is that Scarlet Witch will be in the movie as well. (Feige also stated during the same Q&A that he believes that Scarlet Witch is currently the most powerful hero in the MCU.) Although details about Scarlet Witch’s role in the sequel haven’t been confirmed, there is a theory that she potentially could become the MCU’s next big villain. More than likely fans will be treated to more of the great bromance between Strange and Wong as well. Feige has also gone on record saying that Doctor Strange 2 will be scary but not actually a horror movie, as well as saying that the multiverse will be the key to the MCU’s future.

“The next Doctor Strange film, for instance, features some new MCU characters which will be making their debut in that movie you won’t expect or won’t guess who it is but we found a cool way to make it work because we want to make a particular type of movie there and there was a character who we always wanted to do something with who will fit really well there.”

Speculation over plot details and characters in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will continue to remain rampant until the film’s release. While the wait for the sequel is agonizingly long, half of the fun is debating what could possibly happen based on confirmed facts and fan theories. Feige does a great job of running the Marvel machine smoothly and likely has his reasons for Doctor Strange 2’s 2021 release date in terms of how it ties into the other films in Phase 4. There might be 14 million possibilities how Doctor Strange 2 will turn out, but only one possibility will premiere in 2021.
