Doctor Strange is now available digitally and is a week from being available on variety of different Blu-ray formats. On top of that, it has been running theatrically all over the world since October 20, 2016 where it won the weekend box office for weeks in a row. It ranks as the 9th highest grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date.

Doctor Strange completed its theatrical release as the film prepares to transition to a strictly home-based entertainment property. Director Scott Derrickson (Sinister), is feeling appropriately proud and thankful in the wake of his largest project to date closing.

Derrickson took to Twitter today to express his gratitude to the Marvel fans and everyone who worked on the film, which will likely be regarded as one of the defining movies of Derrickson’s career and has definitely elevated him to a new level in the Hollywood hierarchy of film directors. It also stands apart from many of its contemporary Marvel movies – like Ant-Man or Captain America: Civil War – by not tying directly back to any of the Avengers and only making the barest references back to the movies that came before. It redefines the MCU’s acceptance and understanding of “magic”, as it is referred to, in a way that the Thor movies have muddled through.

For many fans, Doctor Strange breathed fresh air into an archetypical plot from Marvel Studios – the origin. Many of their introductory films could be compared back to the movie that launched the franchise, Jon Favreau’s Iron Man. Ant-Man in particular – even down to the design of the suit – but this was the one that broke the mold. “Broke” may be too strong a world, as superhero origins can really only differ so much, but the powerful visual storytelling aspects that Derrickson seamlessly incorporated and the foreign setting go a long way in making Doctor Strange stand out.

Conversely, is the success of Doctor Strange really that surprising? Movies that come out of Marvel Studios have a certain guaranteed level of profitability just based off fans trust in the brand. This far into the history of the MCU it can be difficult to measure the success of an individual project if it’s not an Avengers movie that shoots straight to the top of the highest grossing list. That in mind, it is still nice to see Derrickson being as appreciative for the movie’s success as he has been, endearing him even more to the fans.
