Fans have seen many companions come and go on Doctor Who. We have witnessed how their relationships have helped humanize the Time Lord when they appeared to be going down a dark path. However, there have been many times where they have disappointed the Doctor because placed their selfish needs and desires ahead of everyone else.
Remember when Rose nearly ripped a hole in the fabric of time because she wanted to see the Doctor again? Or when River Song caused time to almost collapse because she didn’t want to kill the Doctor? These are just some examples that demonstrate how shameless the companions can be. If you want to see more examples, keep reading to discover the 10 most shameless things the Doctor’s companions have ever done.
Rose: Almost Destroyed The Universe
Rose Tyler was the first companion who left a long-lasting impression on the Doctor. For two years, Rose traveled with the Doctor and faced off with some of their greatest enemies. However, their partnership came to an end when Rose became trapped in the parallel universe with Jackie, Mickey, and alternative-Pete.
It seemed that fans were never going to see her again until she made several guest appearances in series 4. It turned out that Rose had been using a dimension cannon to return to the Doctor. Yet, these devices were shown to have fatal consequences, with the Doctor stating how they could rip a hole in the universe. Still, Rose didn’t care about the consequences, as long as she reunited with the Doctor.
Mickey: Stealing Ricky’s Life
Mickey is one of the most underrated companions on the show, with the former mechanic transforming from Rose’s goofy boyfriend to the brave and confident alien-fighter. Yet, this was only possible after Mickey decided to stay in the alternative universe to replace Ricky.
After Ricky was killed by the Cybermen, Mickey decided to stay in the parallel universe to look after “his grandmother” and take his place at The Preachers. Although it appears like a nice gesture on Mickey’s part, he seems to forget that he is erasing Ricky’s existence and memory out of the timeline.
Jack: Stole Someone Else’s Identity
Captain Jack Harkness was able to worm his way into the fans’ hearts back in 2005 when he joined Nine and Rose on their journeys. However, some fans may be shocked to know that there is a darker side to the time agent - considering that this isn’t even his real name.
Jack’s name was adopted as the alias back when he was working for the time agency, taken from a dead American WWII volunteer. However, after Jack found out the agency had erased two years of his life, he quit and decided to become a time-traveling con artist. He would then use his knowledge of the future to help with his scams - which is quite immoral.
Martha: The Osterhagen Key
Out of all the companions, Martha Jones was seen to be the most changed by her travels with the Doctor. When her journey first began, Martha was a hopeful intern training to become a doctor. However, after she decided to quit traveling with Ten, she joined UNIT and became more soldier-like.
In “Journey’s End,” fans see how much Martha has changed when she agrees to become a representative of the Osterhagen project. This project was a defense weapon that would destroy the planet if humanity had no other hope of survival. Martha had no qualms in committing genocide if it stopped the Daleks from taking over the universe.
Donna: Changed History
Donna’s time with the Doctor may have been limited but she did have a strong impact on the Time Lord when she convinced him to break his own rules. In “The Fires of Pompeii,” Donna struggled to watch the destruction of Pompeii as Vesuvius erupted and the residents began to flee for their lives.
Ten continued to ignore her pleas to help the citizens since this is a fixed point in time. However, she soon begs that he save at least one person. “Just someone.” As a result, Ten comes back for the Caecilius family. It could have created paradox but it just wasn’t in Donna’s nature to sit back and watch someone suffer.
River Song: Nearly Caused Time To Collapse
Everyone knows that River Song adored the Doctor and would do anything to save him. However, she crossed a line in “The Wedding of River Song” when she almost caused time to collapse by changing history. This all came about after River Song was programmed to assassinate Eleven under the orders of the Kovarian Chapter.
However, she prevents this fixed point from happening by discharging her weapons system - which causes a paradox and causes time to almost collapse in on itself. She doesn’t care that the world could be falling apart because River says she will suffer more than anyone if she has to kill him. River only gives in to his demands when Eleven agrees to marry her, which shows her motives are purely selfish.
Amy: Preventing The Torture Of The Star Whale
Amy almost cut her journey short on her very first trip when she gets on the wrong side of Eleven in “The Beast Below.” While Eleven and Amy are exploring the 29th century, they notice how people are avoiding the smiling booths and crying children.
Amy soon finds out why when she realizes the UK government has been torturing the star whale to save the country. However, instead of protesting, she chooses to forget it. In a video, she also tells herself to get the Doctor off the ship and to stop him investigating. Although she did it to protect humanity, the Doctor is furious she tried to hide this from him and almost send her home.
Rory: Telling Amy She Didn’t Love Him
Rory Williams holds a special place in the hearts of the fans. Although his character was designed to be a bit of comedy relief at first, Rory came into his own when he became the Last Centurion. However, he did have insecurities over his relationship with Amy that made him appear whiny and needy.
The worst time this insecurity came out was in “Asylum of the Daleks” when Rory and Amy briefly split up. While Rory and Amy are waiting for Ten, the nurse tells Amy that he had always loved her more than she did him. Even though he said it to save her life, Rory ended up hurting Amy more by demeaning her feelings.
Clara: Threatened To Destroy The Tardis
In season 8, Clara and Twelve’s relationship went through a tough time after his regeneration and her blossoming romance with Danny. Clara especially went through a tough when Danny was involved in a traffic accident that kills him (“Dark Water”).
When Clara calls Twelve, she requests he take her to a volcano. However, while Twelve is trying to figure what is wrong with her, Clara begins to pick up all the spare TARDIS keys and knocks him out. When he awakes, Twelve finds Clara threatening to drop all the keys in the lava if he doesn’t help her save Danny. Although Twelve understands her motives, he deems it a betrayal of their friendship.
Bill: Shooting Twelve
Bill Potts was another character who had a very special bond with Time Lord, especially when Twelve began to tutor her after she took an interest in his lectures. However, there were also quite a few moments where it looked as if Bill was about to up and leave Twelve because of the mind games he played.
An example of this being in “The Lie of The Land” when Twelve and Nardole made her believe that he is working with The Monks. As a result, Bill pulls a gun on him and shoots Twelve because she believes there would be no hope for any of them if this was true. Although this was something the Doctor planned, it did show how that Bill was willing to kill anyone to protect the world.
