Sources report that both Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole could potentially leave Doctor Who after the holiday special later this year. Doctor Who just aired its season 12 finale with an episode that has left many fans divided. Not only did the season finale challenge what fans know about the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) going back to the classic version of the show, it also had many wondering where the series could go next.

This season of Doctor Who left many fans shocked and surprised, with others being outraged. Although there is still some pushback against the Doctor now being a woman for the first time, some fans were even more shocked when season 12 introduced a second version of the Doctor as a black woman, another first, in the form of Jo Martin. Although the season finale teased an explanation for Martin’s Doctor, there are still a lot of questions left hanging in the air, like where exactly does Martin’s Doctor fit into the timeline? It’s also unlikely that fans will get an answer anytime soon since the next episode doesn’t air until the holiday season, presumably on New Year’s Day 2021.

One of the most important questions, though, is about the Doctor’s companions. What will happen to Yaz (Mandip Gill), Graham (Bradley Wash) and Ryan (Tosin Cole)? According to the Radio Times, a new source could potentially have an answer, and it’s one that might disappoint some fans of the series. It seems that both Walsh and Cole could soon exit the show, possibly meaning that their last episode would be the New Year’s Day special, “Revolution of the Daleks.”

Earlier this year, rumors about Cole’s exit from Doctor Who surfaced after he took a role with a U.S. TV series. There was also a bit of dialogue in the Doctor Who episode “Can You Hear Me?” where Ryan questioned how the companions could continue to sustain their regular lives while also traveling with the Doctor. Walsh has previously expressed concerns about the grueling schedule of balancing his work on Doctor Who with his other television commitments.

Fans can rest assured, though, that Gill seems to be in it for the long haul. She has continued to speak about how much she loves the show, and her character also seems far more invested in the Doctor’s ongoing adventures. But even if Walsh and Cole leave and break up the TARDIS “fam,” it’s probably not forever as the two could turn up for future episodes. Although any departures will be sad, Doctor Who fans understand it’s the nature of the series - even Doctors regularly come and go.
