Fans of Doctor Who don’t have long to wait for new episodes as BBC and BBC America release an all-new trailer for season 12, confirming a New Year’s Day 2020 premiere. The Doctor’s most recent regeneration paved the way for Jodie Whittaker to become the first female star of the series, and season 11 didn’t disappoint as incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall took the reins from longtime writer Stephen Moffat to bring the Doctor into a new era.
A new Doctor also means new companions, and in this case, Chibnall didn’t skimp on the companions as Whittaker is joined by Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh), and Yasmin Kahn (Mandip Gill). The quartet have had their fair share of intergalactic and timey wimey adventures in season 11, but it looks as though the series is going to kick things up a notch now that the thirteenth Doctor has made a name for herself.

The series’ early 2020 return is no doubt a welcome one to fans, and though the first trailer is typically short on specific details, it does hint at some of the guest stars who’ll be joining the Doctor and her companions once season 12 gets underway. Those guests include Stephen Fry (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), Sir Lenny Henry CBE (Broadchurch), Robert Glenister (Paranoid), and Goran Višnjić (Timeless). The short snippets of the new season certainly look as though Chibnall and co-producer Matt Stevens are ramping up the action. Monsters new and old are plentiful in the trailer and though there’s little context with regard to who the guest stars are playing, it’s safe to say that Višnjić’s mustache is going to be the star of the show.
Doctor Who has become an institution unto itself, and now that institution has begun to feel a bit more inclusive with Whittaker’s casting. The series seems to be making that the focal point of the new season with the tagline “Space. For All.” making it clear the show is intended for everyone. So far, Whittaker’s run as the character has been memorable, so it will be interesting to see where she takes the Doctor in season 12.
