This post contains SPOILERS for Logan
-
Logan opens nationwide today and already the film is shaping up to be an event. Not only is the movie Hugh Jackman’s final turn as Wolverine, but it may very well be his best, with Logan earning rave reviews (read ours!) and (as of this writing) sitting at 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s projected Logan will bank $80 million at the box office this weekend (with an even larger global earning), but given the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the film, those numbers could very well grow.
Fox hasn’t had such an anticipated and well-received X-Men film since last year’s Deadpool (providing only more evidence that fans crave R-Rated comic book movies). And while Jackman is hanging up the claws with Logan, Ryan Reynolds is only getting started as the ‘Merc with the Mouth’. Deadpool 2 is slated to release next year and already speculation over who will join Reynolds as Deadpool’s best pal, Cable, is reaching a fever pitch. Possible contenders have ranged from Steven Lang to Pierce Brosnan to Russell Crowe to Stranger Thing’s David Harbour (to the outlier Keira Knightley), but now there’s another name gaining traction thanks to a Deadpool 2 teaser attached to Logan, and subsequently released online.
The teaser comes before the film and sees Deadpool try and fail to save a man from being gunned down in an alleyway. As you’d expect, the short is irreverent and funny and wholly inappropriate, but as Redditor Jkennie93 noted, it might also be hinting at who is playing Cable. The whole scenario takes place outside a movie theater that is screening Logan and features Deadpool using a telephone booth to change into his costume à la Superman. On that phone booth is some graffiti – “Nathan Summers Cumming Soon” – and plastered on the wall behind him when he exits the booth are posters for Joss Whedon’s Firefly. Prominently featured on those posters is the series’ star, Nathan Fillion, leading Jkennie93 to theorize this teaser might be suggesting Nathan Fillion is playing Nathan Summers AKA Cable.
Is it a stretch? Sure. Could the posters have been included to deliberately start this kind of fan-casting? Absolutely. Fillion is an actor whose name is mentioned practically every time a high profile role is being cast, so it’s perfect trolling. But then again, something as silly as sticking Firefly posters in the background of a Deadpool 2 teaser as a way to hint at Fillion’s casting sounds like something the Deadpool team would do. So maybe?
There’s obviously little hard evidence here and the Firefly posters could simply be there to resonate with an audience that are likely fans of both Deadpool and Joss Whedon’s work. But the posters are certainly hard to miss, suggesting they serve some purpose. Even if it’s just to rile up the fanbase and start wild rumors and campaigns for Nathan Fillion to play Cable.
