DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World wraps up the animated movie trilogy - but is there a post-credits scene teasing more adventures? DreamWorks kicked off the franchise back in 2010 with the first How to Train Your Dragon movie, which introduced viewers to a world where Vikings and dragons were mortal enemies. However, thanks to the friendship of Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and the Night Fury dragon Toothless, the Viking society learned to live alongside dragons rather than fear them.
The franchise continued in 2014 with the highly anticipated sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, which picked up five years after the first film and saw Hiccup assume the role of chief of his clan. The movie also featured Hiccup and his friends face off against villainous dragon trappers, who went against their society’s peaceful relationship with dragons. Now, DreamWorks’ beloved franchise returns with the concluding chapter of its trilogy, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Now that How to Train Your Dragon 3 is hitting theaters, moviegoers may be wondering if they should stick around through to the end of the credits for an additional scene. However, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World does NOT have a post-credits scene. Although fans may want to watch the credits to get an idea of all the people involved in the concluding chapter of DreamWorks’ trilogy, there isn’t any additional footage at the very end.
Although post-credits scenes have been on the rise in Hollywood in recent years - thanks to the massive popularity of comic book movies that have implemented them - not all movies include these stingers. Further, since How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is the final chapter of this trilogy, it makes sense for the movie to be completely wrapped up before the credits roll. Of course, a post-credits scene could have simply been a fun extra scene, not necessarily one that sets up a follow-up, but it would still undercut the thematic ending of How to Train Your Dragon 3.
Still, that’s not to say DreamWorks can’t - or never will - release another movie set within this world. After all, the movie franchise is based on a 12-book series by Cressida Cowell. That’s plenty of material to mine for future films set within the same world as How to Train Your Dragon, but perhaps following different characters than Hiccup and Toothless - though, it should be noted, Hiccup and Toothless are the protagonists of all 12 books.
Whether or not DreamWorks decides to develop another movie set in the same world as How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World remains to be seen, but for now fans checking out the final film in the trilogy can rest assured knowing it doesn’t have a post-credits scene.
