UPDATE: Read our explainer of Shazam’s post-credits scenes.
DC’s Shazam! movie introduces fans to Billy Batson and his superhero alter-ego, but does the film have a post-credits scene - and, if so, how many? The latest entry in Warner Bros. and DC Films’ unofficially titled DC Extended Universe, Shazam! tells the story of a 14-year-old foster kid who becomes a superhero. The origin story follows Billy Batson (Asher Angel) as he meets the Wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou), who grants the boy the powers to become the superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi). In the movie, Billy must face off against the villainous Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) and the Seven Deadly Sins.
Directed by David F. Sandberg from a script by Henry Gayden, Shazam! is the latest DCEU movie to hit theaters following James Wan’s Aquaman. The Jason Momoa-led DC movie was a massive hit, with Aquaman earning largely positive reviews and scoring big at the box office. In fact, Aquaman was the first DCEU movie to pass $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Comparatively, early box office tracking indicates Shazam!’s opening weekend may be one of the worst in the DCEU. However, since Aquaman currently holds the lowest opening weekend of the DCEU, that isn’t necessarily an indication Shazam! won’t be a long-term success.
Now that Shazam! is hitting theaters around the world, fans may be wondering whether the movie has any teasers during or after the credits. Shazam! has TWO post-credits scenes, one placed in the middle of the credits and another at the very end. So, although the credits are always worth sticking around for to get an idea of who was involved in the making of the movie, Shazam! viewers should know there are also two credits scenes to watch.
Now, viewers may be further wondering whether Shazam!’s post-credits scenes are worth watching. Without spoiling either scene, we can reveal Shazam! has adopted Marvel Studios’ typical credits scene placement. That’s to say, the Shazam! mid-credits scene explicitly sets up a sequel and is necessary to understanding where Warner Bros. and DC Films plan to take this solo franchise. The after-credits scene, however, is more of a fun joke that DC movie fans will appreciate. Curiously, though, the after-credits scene has appeared in some of the Shazam! trailers, so it won’t be entirely new to those who have been following the film’s marketing.
Of course, whether Shazam! receives a sequel and follows through on the mid-credits tease remains to be seen. As previously stated, the film’s current box office projections aren’t spectacular, but Shazam! may prove to outperform expectations and have strong enough legs to become a success over time. For now, fans will have to wait and see what’s next for Billy Batson and Shazam after the events of his first solo movie. Moviegoers checking out Shazam! in theaters and wanting more from the superhero can stick around for the film’s two post-credits scenes.
